Breast Cancer Network Australia Celebrates 20 Years with Bakers Delight Pink Bun Campaign


The bakery franchise Bakers Delight hopes to raise $2 million by May 23 in its annual campaign for the Breast Cancer Network Australia.


A BCNA spokesperson said over 600 Australian Bakers Delight stores raised $1.8 million for the BCNA last year, so they are now aiming high in celebration of the charity’s 20-year anniversary.


“We thought, given how successful last year’s campaign was, we would raise the bar in an effort to continue supporting all Australians affected by breast cancer,” the spokesperson said.

BCNA is a charity that focusses on supporting Australian men and women who are affected by breast cancer and providing them with the best support, information, treatment and care appropriate to their individual needs.

Bakers Delight Mooloolaba Owner and Manager Rebecca Burl said in the 20 years BCNA has operated, 18 of those have been spent in partnership with Bakers Delight.

“We have raised $16 million for the BCNA so far. It is growing in success every year.”

Miss Burl said the money helps BCNA send out over 12,000 My Journey Kits free of charge to people who are diagnosed with breast cancer.

“The My Journey Kit reaches more than 80 per cent of people when they are first diagnosed,” she said.

Bakers Delight Mooloolaba Sales Assistant Hanna Barnsley said the bakery franchise aims to collect money through the sales of their pink finger buns, donation tins, pink lady silhouettes and BNCA carry bags.


“We are selling sweet finger buns with different types of pink icing, as well as BCNA brown bags that customers can purchase,” Miss Barnsley said.

The pink buns are currently on sale for $1.50.

100 per cent of the proceeds from the pink buns and BCNA bags are going straight to the Breast Cancer Network Australia.


Miss Barnsley said customers are getting behind the campaign by donating to the money tin and buying the pink ladies for a gold coin.


“Majority of the customers have donated in some way while purchasing something in store,” she said.


The donation tin is available for customers to contribute to the fundraising as well pink lady silhouettes for a gold coin donation.


Miss Burl said people are definitely motivated to make money for the BCNA and the finger buns are flying out the door.


“We hope customers will feel comfort in knowing that their support is going to an amazing cause.


“Our customer’s generosity ensures BCNA are able to support the 18,087 women and 148 men expected to be diagnosed with breast cancer this year,” she said.


Miss Burl said this particular promotion is very important to her and her business as it allows them to give back to the community and support those in need.


“Although not everyone is diagnosed with breast cancer, most people will know someone who has been,” Miss Burl said.


Another way the public can get involved is by hosting a pink bun party to raise money within the workplace, school or a community group.


Once registered, BCNA will send out a free Pink Bun Party Pack containing posters, balloons, pink ladies, booklets and party hats, ready for a morning or afternoon tea party.


Miss Barnsley said she is confident they will reach the target, as $500,000 has already been raised by all stores so far.


“If everyone puts in that little extra sales effort to promote the campaign, I really think we can reach the target,” she said.
